Keeping Your Kicks Looking Country Fresh - Proper Cowboy Boot Care

by Maas Roelvink

If you are going to be buying a pair of cowboy boots, you will soon be enjoying a comfortable boot that makes a great fashion statement. There are several types, colors, and embellishments available on boots, each giving you a distinct look that dresses up your look with style. To revel in your new look, your boots should be cared for properly.

There are a few steps to take when maintaining a pair of cowboy boots, allowing you to continue your new look for years to come. Here are a few tips to follow:

Cleaning Procedure

It is important to give your boots a rubdown after each wearing to remove any dirt or dust that may have accumulated within the cracks or stitching of the material your boots are made from. Use a clean piece of microfiber cloth and gently rub on your boots to remove any hiding debris.

Conditioning Procedure

Using a conditioner on leather boots is recommended to help keep them from drying out or starting to crack. If you notice your boots looking a bit lackluster in appearance, dab on some conditioner to spruce them up quickly. Using conditioner too frequently will cause them to be prone to molding, so it is best to let conditioner dry completely between applications. If you have suede cowboy boots, conditioner is not needed. Instead spray on a stain and water protector to keep your boots from becoming discolored.

Drying Procedure

If you happen to get your cowboy boots wet, do not place them in front of a heater or use a hair dryer on them in an attempt to get them to dry out. These methods will dry up the leather, causing it to prematurely crack. Instead, put your boots in a safe spot to air-dry, away from moisture and humidity.

Storing Procedure

Storing your boots should be in a closet with a door if you have pets or small children. Place a liter sized bottle in each boot to keep in an upright position. A boot rack can also be used to help maintain the shape of your boots. Failing to place something in your boots will cause them to crumple and appear folded or wrinkled.

Removing Procedure

When taking off your boots it is important not to try pulling one boot by using the heel of your other boot. Have someone else pull each boot off for you if it is difficult or awkward for you to do it on your own. If there is no one readily available, a boot jack will do the job without harming the condition of your boots in any way.
