If your boyfriend is really into the environment and animal rights, then you understand how important clothing choices are. It seems like everything that's for sale nowadays is made either with dead animals, petrochemicals, or materials that destroy the environment. However, there are lots of alternatives if you know what to look for. You might have to shop online because your local department store is unlikely to carry these items.
A Non-Leather, Non-Nylon Wallet
Leather wallets are a classic, but for an ethical vegetarian they are not something that's an option. Many vegetarians, perhaps your boyfriend, have compromised and ended up using a nylon wallet. While nylon is a better option than leather in that it does not require the death of an animal for its production, it's still not a great choice because it is not biodegradable and creates an enormous amount of greenhouse gases.
The better option is to get a recycled rubber wallet. These are made from old tires. They are durable and have a solid feel, unlike flimsy nylon. The rubber is processed so that it is smooth on the outside. The wallets don't look like an old tire; they look like a plain black leather wallet.
Military Style Belt Made Of Hemp
Military style belts were traditionally made using cotton and brass buckles. While this might seem like a perfectly acceptable material combo, many eco-friendly individuals will take umbrage with cotton. Even though cotton is natural it is not the best natural material to use. Hemp requires less water and pesticides to use and it is also stronger. That superior strength is great because it means the belt will last longer and won't fray as soon as a cotton belt.
Military belts are also great if your guy fluctuates in weight. Unlike regular belts that use a buckle with a hole and prong design system, military style belts have a tooth system. The teeth grab onto the belt and secure it shut. So he could still use it if he ends up dropping a lot of weight during a juice fast or some other diet change. With a leather belt, new holes would need to be punched into the belt.
Frankenstein Sneakers
These sneakers aren't actually called Frankenstein sneakers, but like the scientist's monster they are made from many various materials. A common configuration might be recycled rubber soles, hemp uppers, an organic and fair trade cotton interior and shoelaces made from recycled soda bottles (PET plastic). These are sneakers that are good for the environment and also tell a cool story.
